Horizons is a duo consisting of saxophonist Erik Hove and pianist Simon Côté-Lapointe. The two distinguished improvisers reinterpret and reinvent compositions by the American pianist/composer/bandleader Sun Ra.

The project originated in 2018 when Simon, searching the depths of the web, stumbled across an archive of hand-written manuscripts of Sun Ra compositions. The duo had a regular gig playing together, and from that the idea of focusing on these marvelous compositions emerged. With more than 20 years of experience each, in both jazz and experimental music, the two interpreters/improvisers set themselves the task of deciphering this rich repertoire, marked by its originality and strong avant-guard approach.

Striving to continue the legacy of the work, Hove and Côté-Lapointe decided to stay within the confines of a duo – rather than the larger ensembles more characteristic of the music – to highlight the virtuosity and interplay of the musicians as well as the singular beauty of the melodies.

Several of Sun Ra’s more striking pieces have been assembled for this album, which was released by Hecto and recorded live at Café Résonance in December of 2019, and which we happily share below.
